🗞️ LOCAL NEWS
🌑☀️ 2024’s Solar Eclipse Boosting Local Hotel Bookings
The upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024, has led to a surge in hotel reservations across Ohio, especially in the Miami Valley. The path of totality, where the eclipse is fully visible, covers most of the Miami Valley, with Shelby County at its center. Shelby County is preparing to provide an unforgettable experience to visitors. Local projections estimate that Shelby county’s population will triple from 48,000 to 140,000 on the day. But there will be plenty of viewing spots in the Dayton-area as well. Levitt Pavilion, Day Air Ballpark, and Five Rivers Metroparks have already stated they'll be holding viewings. For the first time since 1806, Ohio will have a prime viewing of a total solar eclipse, and we won’t have another until 2099. We'll be keeping you up-to-date as it gets closer with more viewing spots, events, and news. This once-in-a-lifetime sighting will be in our own backyard! [WDTN]
🏠 Mont. County Hosting Forums On Updated Property Values
Notices about tentative new property values were sent to residents in early August. Last week, we shared how homeowners can appeal their updated values by requesting an informal review call through Sep. 22nd. Starting at the end of this month, the Auditor’s Office is also hosting seven forums for residents to discuss their updated values. These forums will be held at various Dayton Metro Library branches, continuing through the end of October. If you want to find the specific locations and times of each forum, check out the linked source article → [WYSO]
🌫️ Grant Won For Regional Climate Action Planning
The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) has secured a one million dollar climate grant from the federal EPA. A major use of this grant will be to create a detailed accounting of the Miami Valley's greenhouse gas emissions, which surprisingly hasn’t been done yet. After all, you can only manage what you can measure. The grant will also support setting emission reduction targets and developing strategies to achieve them. In approximately two years, the MVRPC aims to finalize a regional climate action plan. [WYSO]

🔦 LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
The Deli Serving One Of Dayton's Best Reubens
Flyboy’s “The Liberty” Reuben, Photo by Flyboy’s Deli Oakwood
In 2013, husband and wife duo Steve Crandall and Eunice Kim combined their passions to open a New York-style deli in the Miami Valley. Eunice was experienced in running delis on the East Coast, and Steve, being a retired Air Force Colonel and Flyboy himself, brought his love for aviation. Thus, Flyboy’s Deli took flight in Oakwood.
Given that Dayton is the birthplace of flight - no matter what North Carolina says - they wanted their deli to pay homage to the Wright Brother's legacy. Their first location is just a short walk from Hawthorn Hill, the estate of history's first Flyboy - Orville Wright.
💡 Fun Fact: On December 17th, 1903, Orville was the first to fly for 12 seconds. But Wilbur’s flight was the best of the day, lasting 59 seconds.
The second floor of the deli, Aviation Hall, has a beautiful ceiling mural of planes from both World Wars and our area’s inventors. Anytime we go, we either sit up there or on their rooftop balcony which overlooks Oakwood’s boutiques. The second floor is especially great if you have a big group.
While a fun atmosphere and cool aesthetics make any meal better, Flyboy’s hasn't rested their laurels on that. These folks are serving up damn good sandwiches.
“The Liberty” Reuben has been voted the #1 sandwich in Dayton.com’s “Best of Dayton” for many years. As a big fan of Reubens, it’s definitely got my vote. They also have good gluten-free bread, which is a very big win in our book as my wife is gluten-free. With lots of beers on tap - many of which are local - there’s always something fun to sip as well.
Whether you’re looking for a new spot to have a business lunch or going out with family/friends, Flyboy’s Deli is always a good time with great food!
