π¦ Giving Away 12,000 Turkey Dinners Today
Miami Valley Meals (MVM) is giving away 12,000 turkey dinners across six sites in the area today. Dayton Cooks are also chipping in and providing desserts. This is all a part of MVM's 4th annual Thanksgiving Turkey Takeaway. But in many ways, it's just another day for them. Because transforming donated food into bulk meals for those in need is their bread and butter.
MVM was born out of the pandemic. They started out as nomadic cooks, using whichever kitchen would give them space. Now, they have their own building where they produce 4,000 meals a week. These meals are then distributed to those in need through their non-profit partners.
It's amazing the impact they're having. Not just today, but every day, for so many families in the Miami Valley. If you'd like to learn more and support their mission, then visit Miami Valley Meals' website. And if you'd like to read more about their prep for today's Turkey Takeaway, check out this story from WYSO.
π UDβs Strong Showing At The Charleston Classic
Dayton had a strong performance last week at the Charleston Classic. This early-season tournament is often a bellwether for March Madness potential. They won their first game against LSU in a massive comeback. With only 9 minutes left in the game they were down by 15 points and things were looking bleak. But then Kobe Elvis scored a lay-up and kicked off a 19-point run for the team. By the time the final buzzer went off, they had won (70-67).
The Flyers went on to beat St. John's (88-81) but lost the championship game to Houston (69-55). Dayton's forward, Nate Santos, averaged 17 points a gameβthe 3rd highest of all players in the tournament. He also had the highest field goal percentage, making 68% of his shots. This stellar performance earned him a spot on the all-tournament team. This puts Dayton's record at 3 wins and 2 losses. They'll have the opportunity to add to it this Friday (Nov. 24th) when they play Youngstown State at home. [Dayton Daily News]
ποΈ Exhibit Exclusive: The Birth of Modern Paris
Dayton is the only North American city showcasing "Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec: The Birth of Modern Paris." This exhibit features 240 works by the renowned French artist. He was known for capturing the vibrant life of 19th-century Paris, showcasing the scenes of music halls, cafes, and the lives of everyday Parisians. Of all these works, it was his posters that made him famous. Many of these became collectibles, which is likely why they've been so well preserved for over a century.
As you go through the Dayton Art Institute, you'll feel like you're walking through Paris in the 1800s with soft-colored walls and old-time music playing. You can learn more about this special exhibit here. The exhibit will be in town through January 14th before heading off to its next stop in Japan. [Dayton Daily News]
